Back Pain

Back pain is a common complaint. It is one of the most common reasons for people visiting their doctor. In the United States, more than 80% of adults suffer from back pain at some point in their life. However, not all back pain is caused by a serious problem such as a ruptured disc or an infection. Most of the time, it is just a temporary nuisance.

Many people have experienced back pain at some point in time. They may have experienced a sharp pain when lifting something heavy or bending over to pick something up. This is usually the result of muscles tightening up and pulling on the vertebrae that make up the spinal column. This causes pressure to be put on the nerves that travel through the spinal column. These nerves can become irritated and cause pain. This pain is often described as a dull ache.

Most of the time, back pain will go away within a few days or weeks. However, if the pain persists for more than a month, you should see your doctor.
